On the 8th of January 1999 a discussion took place in the Berlin Pavilion as an accompanying programme to the exhibition "Alvar Aalto – Bremen, Berlin, Essen, Wolfsburg", with Wolfsburg as the topic.

A podium discussion was organised with the Finnish architects Kaarlo Leppänen and Mikko Merckling (who both formerly worked in the Alvar Aalto office in Helsinki) and Professor Reinhard Roseneck, regional curator in Braunschweig.

The discussion was led by the architect Cornelia Thömmes of the Alvar-Aalto-Zentrum e.V. Society in Wolfsburg.

Numerous friends of the architect Alvar Aalto came from Berlin and also from the Wolfsburg region to take part in this closing event.

The architect Leppänen was at the time responsible in the Aalto office for the design of the cultural centre in Wolfsburg.

He co-ordinated the design work with contacts to the buildings firms and the municipal building department in Wolfsburg. He was present during the whole design and construction phases and was able to give precise information on the co-operation with Alvar Alto during the design work in the office and during the construction phase. At the time there was close co-operation with the municipal building department of the town. Alvar Aalto undertook the overall artistic supervision of the building.
